Spring Sump Pump Test- How to....

If you home has a sump pump located in the basement, as part of your annual spring home maintenance, here is a easy way to test the pump. The last thing you want is spring run off filling the sump pit and then flooding your basement due to a faulty pump... Trust Me!

Remove the cover of the sump, typically its as simple as a few screws.

The best way to test the full function of the pump is to simple add water to the sump (i.e. garden hose) until the float (think float like in a toilet tank) raises to the height that the switch starts the pump. If the pump starts to move water you are successful!

Another way to test...locate where the sump pump is plugged into the outlet, (notice here there is a indicator add-on that illuminates showing there is power to the outlet). (Ensure there is an amount of water in the pit)

The plug on the side is to function the switch (float) the main plug is for the pump. Unplug the switch from the side and plug in the main pump plug, you should here the pump begin to push water immediately. If you only hear a humming noise it means there is a problem with the pump and it should be replaced. Replace the side Switch plug and reinstall the plug assembly into the outlet.
